What is a diet? Why do people go on diets anyway? Well, diet in nutrition it is defined as the amount of consumed by humans or organisms. The word diet also implies the use of specific nutrition for health and weight-management reasons. There are diets for health reasons and there are those for weight loss. The latter is nowadays the more important concern and more popular.  With the constant rise in the obesity problems in society, hundreds, possibly thousands of different kinds of diets have abounded. It is not only the obesity problem that make people go on diets but also the aim to look more like the skinny people the media presents as the bodies and looks we mere mortals should aim for.

Personal Diets have been formulated to suit lifestyles, health, religion and many other things. There are diets that promise quick results, there are those that promise slow but steady results. There are those named after their creators like the Atkins diet, Jenny Craig and many others. There are also those that are named after the food that the diet should consist of. Examples for this are the Grapefruit diet and Cabbage diet. These are just some of the personal diets that promise weight loss that is if you strictly follow what needs to be done and eaten.

A diet’s aim should not only be losing the excess pounds but should ultimately be aimed towards having a healthier body. And how can these be achieved? Well, a healthy intake of the right amount of food coupled with exercise should do the trick. Stay away from those fast-food and desserts. Make fruits, vegetables, fiber-rich food be your best-friends. This does not promise quick results but isn’t getting results better than quick results but an unhealthy body and in the end gaining back all the lost pounds?

Some things to remember when take on a personal diet plan, make sure it fits your lifestyle and it’s something you can stick to. Control your cravings but once in a while, reward yourself but remember, eat in moderation-no bingeing. The success of a diet will ultimately depend on you- self-control and disciplines are key!

So are you planning to go on a diet and lose those love handles? There are a lot of people who are struggling to lose those extra pounds but don’t have an idea on how to start. Going on a personal diet is indeed a lifestyle change. It needs a lot of determination and commitment to achieve a healthier and a fitter you.

Before making any changes to your diet, you have to see where you are right now. That means knowing your weight especially your body mass index or your BMI. It’s a good thing to keep a track of what you’re eating every day and also how much exercise you’re doing. This may be something new to you, but we should keep in mind that eating is something that we do each day and sometimes we are not really aware of the food that we’re taking. As soon as you start jotting down the food that you’re eating every day, you may learn your habits more. You may be taking in a lot of extra pop which you were not aware of. By doing this, you will know what to change and the kind of diet that you need to maintain.

The next step is the challenging part. You have to make a long-term commitment. Changing you’re eating and exercise habits will not be enough for six weeks or six years. You have to make changes that will last for a life time.

Essentially, any diet program will work when it comes to weight reduction. There are a variety of diet books and websites online that deal with weight loss. But if you want to lose weight, it is important that you use different strategies, like for some people they do a lot of physical activity on top of a personal diet or for some they monitor their whole program, like continuously monitoring their weight and keeping food diaries.

The usual question that pops up in people’s minds is, “Is exercise really needed?” Cutting back on your calories may let you lose weight but exercise is really necessary to keep the weight off. Dieting won’t have a lasting effect, but if this is paired with exercise then it will have a lasting benefit.

The raw food diets goes by a lot of names, but this type of diet is one of the strictest ones out there mainly because it demands a whole lot of dedication to stay healthy while on this personal diet. As you may well have inferred from the title, this diet requires you to eat un-cooked food. And what food can be safely eaten while raw? Well, there’s always sashimi but not a lot of people are open to eating raw fish day in and day out. In fact, not a lot of people are crazy about eating raw dead animals at all. This raw food diet has very vegan leanings and while very stringent does have its good points and some bad points as well.

For you to be a qualified raw food dieter, at least 75% of the food you consume has to be uncooked and living. For something so strict the benefits must be sky high right? It depends, some of its benefits include better skin appearance, improved energy levels, weight loss and lower risk for heart disease since the raw food diet has fewer levels of saturated and trans fats than the normal diet for westerners. It also has lower amounts of sodium while containing higher levels of magnesium and potassium.

So what can you eat while on this personal diet: choose fruits and vegetables that are organic and unprocessed. You can also indulge in seeds, nuts, beans and even seaweed. Dehydrated food is also welcome along with young coconut juice and freshly squeezed juices. Take note that 75% of the food you eat must not be heated in temperatures exceeding 116F.

This type of personal diet is not for everyone as it is time consuming and very particular when it comes to methods of food preparation. Most of the meals are made from fresh ingredients and nothing comes pre-packed. Some ingredients are also hard to find and are only available in specialty shops.

Meat eaters will also balk at not being allowed to consume any meat. Children, pregnant women, c, and people suffering from osteoporosis since some minerals might be missing in this diet.

Hibiscus flower of the genus family Malvaceae gets its name from Greek word ?ß?s??? (hibískos), a name given by Pedanius Dioscorides. The species are 200-220 in number with over 10,000 varieties, flowering with various colours from brilliant red to various hues of pink, orange, white, purple and so on except for pure blue or black, six distinctive forms of petal arrangement from single, double to crested etc.

Some of family grows up to 15 feet if not meddled with, growing mostly in warmer climate annually or as perennial plant. It is known as sorrel, hibiscus, flor de Jamaica and as rosemallow. In ancient times in India its leaves and flower were used for its medicinal and cosmetic use which is now a part of ‘Ayurveda’.

The ‘Javakusum’ or ‘Shoeflower’ as it’s known popularly in India, China is used for its medicinal properties as well as an offering to deity. Ironically its lustrous hue makes it to be used to shine the shoes giving it the name Shoeflower.

This showy flower’s plant often used as a landscaping shrub is used to make drink called sorrel in Caribbean islands like Jamaica. Hibiscus is mixed with various herbs, roots as well as spices and sweetened (with sugar) and served as cold drink. At times Jamaican wine or rum is also added to it.

It  is also used to prepare tea which is taken hot and cold as well. Because of its diuretic property it is often found in use by dieters and people having kidney problems. It is also known to lower blood pressure. It also help in reducing  cholesterol.

One of the species, Kenaf, is used in making paper. In Caribbean especially, Roselle is taken in as vegetable and also to prepare tea and jam. It is also nowadays used as a food colouring agent. Roots used to make an assortment of concoctions are believed to cure mild ailments as cough. The bark contains bast fibres which are very strong and in Polynesia are used to make grass skirts.

They are also used in making wigs. The leaves and flowers are used for hair and scalp treatment as well. Flowers are also used as hair colour.

Are you one of the millions currently on some sort of personal diet plan? If you are, then this might be of interest to you. A lot of people are adding a curious little berry to their diet after research showed that it aids in weight loss. What most people do is simply incorporate this berry into their existing personal diets and watch the pounds melt away.

So what is this berry? It is called the Acai berry and was mentioned by Dr. Nicholas Perricone as one of the top 10 superfoods in some of his books. Dr. Perricone is well known as a weight-loss expert and this catapulted the Acai berry into world-wide fame.  This Acai berry is apparently rich in antioxidants, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids that aid with weight loss. People just can’t get enough of it. Anything that is stamped with Acai berry on the packaging gets snapped up by weight conscious dieters.

Just how do people incorporate it into their diets? Simply by consuming Acai berry in one of its myriad of forms, you get to benefit from its weight loss properties. The taste is said to be pleasantly tart, good news for people who like drinking juices or those who are into juice diets. If you prefer something more efficient, Acai Berry also comes in tablet or pill form. Some cereal companies put dried Acai berries into their cereals and granola bars, but tread carefully since some of these cereals come packed with a lot of sugar and calories that are not conducive to weight loss.  This berry has been used for centuries for its health benefits, some of which help the prevention of diabetes; it is also high in fiber that is important for digestion.

The only downside to this personal diet supplement is that there is no study that provides actual proof of its weight-loss powers.  It may also be hard to distinguish between the healthy and the unhealthy Acai products that may contain alarming levels of sugar and additives. Plus, there is no such thing as the Acai berry diet so an actual plan of Acai berry amounts to consume doesn’t exist yet.

While reading about kinds of personal diets, I ran into some very interesting things called meal replacements. Now, I know nothing can really replace a nice home-cooked meal, but for those of you looking to lose weight, this might be something that will interest you.

Meal replacements come in the form of smoothies or meal bars that have an average of a hundred or less calories while claiming to still have the right amount of minerals and nutrients a person needs to stay healthy. Not to be confused with diets that use snacks as a way to plug your hunger while not really offering you any nutrients. Meal replacements are just that, meals with right nutrients you can have in one gulp. Some makers of meal replacements even allow you to throw in some oats or fruits to put ass some bulk to your smoothie or granola bar.

The concept of this is to limit your calorie intake while still keeping you healthy. Minimal exercise is required and light snacks of fruits and whole wheat bread are allowed. Ideally, these meal replacements are to be taken twice a day while allowing you to have whatever you want in moderation for a mid-day meal. The makers also advise you to add an extra serving of meal replacement anytime you still feel hungry and have reached your fruit and wheat bread quota.

This type of diet is pretty strict, it doesn’t allow for any alcohol consumption which could be a bummer if you’re the happy hour type. But really, is giving up alcohol that devastating? If you simply cannot function without alcohol, I suggest you get another kind of help. I’m just here to talk personal diets. The upside to this diet is it’s a good way to detoxify, but as you are asked to stick to it for a month, some people fall off the wagon. One downside to this personal diet plan is that the concept of drinking food doesn’t sit too well with some people, and the granola/cereal bars are not the most appetizing things in the world. All in all, this diet could make a great option to jumpstart your weight loss program.

In our weight obsessed society, people come up with thousands of ways to become skinny and if you are part of the lucky few, simply stay skinny. The same weight obsession has resulted in food becoming an enemy. Oh yes, for most dieters, food is simply public enemy number one and the less they consume of it, the better. This has led to some people into making food alternatives. Can anything really take the place of food? Why of course. Traditional food is being replaced low-calorie snacks that are designed to keep the cravings at bay and yet put something in your stomach to keep the cravings at bay.

For some people, their sweet tooth is their downfall. The craving for sweets is simply something they cannot deny and more often than not, this craving for sweets wreaks havoc in their personal diets. This has lead to some people creating diets especially designed for people who have a sweet tooth. If you’re one of these people, then let me warn you in advance that this kind of diet is very restrictive. It allows for you to consume low-calorie cookies and or granola bars that are to be eaten throughout the day. With these light frequent snacks, you will be advised to drink lots of water around 8-10 glasses which I guess also helps you feel full. These diets usually allow for a small meal which consists of lean red meat or any kind of lean protein and a tiny portion of vegetables at any one time during the day.

One example of this type of diet is Dr. Segal’s Cookie diet- six cookies to be eaten throughout the day keeps the sweet cravings at bay, plus one small meal at night and lots of liquids. The upside is that the weight comes off rapidly and there is no mention of exercise, but this diet is so low calorie that most people don’t even have the energy to get up and do some laps around the neighborhood, never mind lifting weights at the gym.

I tell you, this diet is not for the faint of heart but could always be considered as a short term option.

What’s that? You eat everyday and yet you’re still piling on the pounds? Well dear friend, take a good look at what you eat, how much you eat and when you eat. See, what you consume ads up and at the end of the day, it still boils down to healthy food versus Junk food. That title wasn’t meant to lure you into a false sense of security because by eating the right food every day, you do yourself the favor of not starving and yet not gaining weight.

Let me break it down for you, the honest to god truth is that our bodies need food. There’s no two ways about it, our bodies are machines and they need fuel to function properly. But the kind of fuel you put into your machine matters, and it matters a lot. Do you see where I’m getting at? Would you attempt to put the wrong fuel into your brand-spanking new Porsche? I think not. So why treat your body any different?

Yes, I recommend that you eat everyday, but eat the right food at the right amounts please! I’m saying skip the fast-food, that stuff is poison. Its deep-fried, fatty, sodium loaded, processed-beyond recognition poison served to you in a plastic bag complete with a smile. If you really must get your fast-food fix, limit it. How about once a week instead if once every single day? I understand that a little indulgence won’t kill you and in fact may make going on a diet more bearable.

There are no lose-weight fast promises here folks, just plain old good advice on eating right and exercising. A lot of people follow this diet and while they may not be stick thin, they are healthy and fit. What more can you ask for really.

The key to losing weight while still eating is good old-fashioned common sense- eat only when you are hungry and stop when you are full. Follow the food pyramid; it’s a great guide to the kind of food you can consume at the right amount. Know that deep-fried is killer and do not deep fry the food pyramid items. Everything in moderation and you’ll be a happy camper.

Have you ever been on a diet? Well I have- a lot actually. I have lost pounds and gained them back. Gained more than what I lost, this was disheartening. I have skipped meals, eaten just salads, biscuits and little bits of what-not that have the lowest calorie content. Yes, I lost 10 pounds but a few weeks later gained 15! That for you is a yo-yo diet which falls under fad diets.

Let me tell you more about it. Yo-yo dieting is when you skips meals and eat very low calorie meals. Starving oneself is not the way to go. You might lose a few pounds which you might think is successful but eventually gain them all back and then some more. This kind of personal diet will eventually take its toll on the body.

The fact is, yo-yo dieting is unhealthy. The body, when subjected to starvation causes loss of both body fat and muscle. The body then loses energy and becomes weak. This may cause more problems. The other effect of this diet may also be depression due to the fact that it gets harder to lose each time.

What I recommend is a healthy personal diet plan coupled with exercise for weight loss. Eating lots of vegetables and fruits and just the right amount of protein. Stay away from fast food, the calorie loaded French fries, fried chicken and other deep-fried goodies. It’s just a matter of control and right portions. Do not subject your body to extreme measures that fad diets promise to give. Love yourself, feed it right, and treat it right.

Let me give you some realistic tips to losing weight:

  • Exercise! This builds muscle that helps burn.
  • Do not skip breakfast as this is the most important meal of the day have a realistic weight loss goal that you know you can achieve.
  • Try to eat healthy meals and stay away from too much sugar.
  • Treat your body right, doing this can only mean great things for you.
  • A healthy body means a healthier and happier you.

And last find the right diet that will suit your lifestyle.

Different people find different diets that work for them. Some people opt for strict-diets where they are forbidden from consuming evil carbohydrates; while others go for diets that depend on a person’s blood type. Oh yes, sounds kooky but let me tell you, that exists along with a slew of other diets that seem to demand more dedication than your two-year old child.

Enough about demanding diets; what I want is a personal diet that allows me to eat as the omnivore that I am. I mean, it is common knowledge that omnivores can eat both plants and meat. Why, the human omnivore can even eat food of the third kind, by that I mean fast-food. I’m guilty as I’m sure you are too of giving in to cravings for golden-yellow French fries sprinkled liberally with salt and drowned in ketchup, oh man, I’m not making things easy am I? But to prove a point, there is a diet that allows for you to give in to your cravings. It’s called The Eating Sensibly diet, a name I made up on my own but I assure you already do exist by another name. It’s a pretty awesome diet as it provides you plenty of leeway to eat like a normal person. A big variety of food is recommended but with a slight preference towards vegetarian options. A fancy way of telling you to eat more of the green stuff but also tells you to eat some meat. We all know meat can turn into the enemy if not eaten in sensible servings. BY all means eat your fruits and vegetables with a restricted serving of meat and starchy grains.

Great diet huh? But before you think this is a piece of cake, you have to remember that it only works if you are willing to limit your consumption of certain food groups. Meat is limited while processed foods are totally off-limits while you’re on this diet.

All in all, I say this personal diet offers you a pretty good deal. You get to eat unlimited fruits and veggies, some protein and grains while eschewing the artery clogging processed food. Sign me up please.
