Whenever you go out to eat, the menu is filled with diet-breaking options – Cheeseburgers, fries, taco supreme, deep friend chicken and many, many more. Most Americans eat their meals in restaurants, choosing food that is high in calorie and fat will definitely wreak havoc in your waistline.

Knowing what to order will really help you in your personal diet and you will benefit from eating a healthier selection of food. Making the right choice consists of choosing meals that have a lot of fruits and vegetables as well as lean choices of meat, fish and poultry. A good thing nowadays is that restaurants have healthy options on their menu, or even a vegetarian selection.

Going to a deli is a better choice and you can have more control over what you eat. Most of the time, you can choose to make your own sandwich, so you can choose the type of bread to begin with, like whole-wheat, pumpernickel or rye. One thing to look out for is the meats and the cheeses. Keep in mind that much of deli meat is high in sodium and fat like pepperoni and salami so are the cheeses. Opt for the turkey or the low-fat ham.

When making a sandwich, make sure that you load this with veggies. Adding tomatoes, cucumbers, green and red peppers is beneficial since these have a lot of nutrients. Remember to skip the mayo and opt for mustard or a small amount of olive oil.

The next place where people usually go are Italian restaurants. Instead of ordering pasta with creamy white or butter sauce opt for marinara sauce.  If you’re the type who’s not really into marinara, then you can always order grilled meat or chicken, grilled eggplant pomodoro or polenta. Italian cuisine is usually loaded with a lot of cheese and meat, if possible stay away from these and opt for the healthier variety.

What about pizza? Portion control is key. Have one or two slices and pair this with a bowl of salad. Always choose thin-crust pizza and opt for vegetable toppings instead of meat.

It doesn’t mean that when you’re trying to lose weight, you couldn’t enjoy eating out again. Going on a personal diet just means you need to have more self-control and knowing the right kind of food that is good for you.
